Betsi Flint Q&A
Last week we had a subscriber-only Q&A with the great Betsi Flint. We talked serving- mostly with regards to beach volleyball, but there’s plenty of good takeaways for the indoor side as well. In another blatant attempt to get subscribers to write articles for me, I asked for some of the top takeaways from participants.
PW: I really liked how she said she was challenged by her coaches to serve more precisely. When she talked about her coaches asking her to hit the line and take more risks in practice really hit home. I think players need to practice serving to small targets to increase their precision.
GD: One idea that really got me thinking was "the serve they least expect is the one they are going to get aced on". This led to an interesting discussion about what these "least expected" serves look like, with servers varying their speed, depth, spin/hybrid, starting position, etc.
MS: In regards to coaching the servers, I found it interesting that Betsi said she will meet her servers where they are in regards to how they like to serve. Instead of being very adamant and specific on how she wants them to look while serving, she gives them the base requirements but allows them to find what’s comfortable for them.
