Earlier this week I talked about the importance of teaching pass-to-attack footwork and I shared some of my technical keys. Here’s 5 gifs showing players at various levels performing that footwork pattern.
Club
This is really nice for a club kid and I use this as an example clip when I do clinics for high school kids. No extra steps or wasted motion and she covers some ground on the first 2 steps so she’s not broad-jumping too much as she gets to the ball. She cuts her plant-step a little close and the ball gets over her head a touch, so she’s wristing away this shot more than ideal, but this is pretty good.
Practice
Here’s an angle that’s a bit different than you normally see on game film. The detail I like here is the big arc step on the first step. This leads to the 2nd step being able to be more straight to the edge of the box which leads to the 4th step crossing past the 3rd step (look at the image below) which means she can hit this ball cross or (as in this clip) turn it back down the line.
