I really like these triples concepts as I find myself training in groups of 3's (9, 12, 15 athletes at a practice/camp).

You've talked about 4-ball passing a couple of times and I read the post. I'm just wondering from the diagram you provide in that post, are you using 2 balls and doing a butterfly? So the athlete in zone 1 would serve straight to the person in z1 on the other side and on the other side you have a z6 athlete server across to the z6 player and then you rotate through on your same side? Because you mention 4-ball passing, I'm thinking you're having athletes serve 4 balls at the same time? Sorry...I'm just trying to picture how that drill would work.

Yes, 4 balls are essentially being served "at the same time." Now in reality, you want to have a slight stagger. So say I'm in zone 1, serving across the net at the zone 5 passer on the other side. There's also a server behind that passer (in zone 5) serving at the passer in front of me (in zone 1). What I do is let them serve, and then as soon as that serve goes, I serve.

In reality, two kids do sometimes serve at the exact same time, but ideally you give a slight stagger so that the visual field can clear and you don't have the balls hitting each other in the air. Does that make sense? I can try to get some video at some point.

Yes a video would really help as I'm 'new' to coaching...did 4 years as an assistant coach learning the ins and outs of how practices are run before taking on the responsibility of head coach. I'm from Canada and we have a National Coaches Certification Program (NCCP) coaching track and Volleyball Canada has 3 certification levels (developmental, advanced and High Performance). I have my Developmental (13-16U age classes) and I'm signed up for the Advanced (17-18U).

I coached my first team last season with 15U developmental athletes (females) whom it was their first time playing and only had 4 athletes with actual club experience. It was the most gratifying experience for me and super fun teaching them the game. We didn't win a lot, but our club sent out a survey for that team and I received all positive reviews from the parents and most importantly the athletes. They told me they just loved the process of learning the skills as I had to be patient as many of these athletes lost 2 seasons with the pandemic.

I've been pouring over all of your writings and I have a GMS+ account and read your stuff on there too...as I like the way you 'see' and approach the game.

One post I'd love to see you write is how to manage your first tournament as a Juniors coach. Like bench coaching is a different beast all together...at least to me. Besides the practices leading up to the tournament, I learned that you have to prepare a lot of 'admin' work in advanced (at least up here in Canada). I have my rotations and subs (we follow the international limited subs rule), I have my assistant take the stats on your stat app, etc...

Keep up the great work! Love reading your content.

That sounds like a good idea for a post. I'll work on that!
