I like the idea of guiding them on where they should be to start with (covering the tip/roll) and where they CAN be to finish (at the pin, or inside more?) and then letting them self-organize the movement in between.
Agreed. I think one of the additional factors are that the vast majority of the time when you "practice transition," it's as a blocker. And, while you do see some good hitters beckpedal after blocking, I think turning and running ends up being the better solution for most. But off-blocker transition is a different move, and just getting players attuned to where they are and need to end up (as you said) pays dividends.
